WEEK 24-PGP-Article- What Will Your Children Remember? Creating a Family Legacy of Values

Years from now, children may not remember every toy they received, every television program they watched, or every activity that filled their childhood days.

But they may remember how their family lived.

They may remember being taught to tell the truth even when it was difficult. They may remember helping someone who needed kindness, being expected to keep a promise, learning to apologize, showing respect to grandparents, or being reminded to appreciate what they had.

These seemingly ordinary experiences become part of a family’s legacy.

Parents and grandparents have a unique opportunity to intentionally pass important values from one generation to the next. Our stories, traditions, examples, and conversations help children understand not only where their family came from, but also the kind of people their family hopes they will become.

Try asking children: What values are most important in our family? What have your grandparents taught you? How would you like people to remember you? What family traditions would you like to pass along someday?

Their answers may surprise you. More importantly, those answers create opportunities for parents and grandparents to share the experiences, beliefs, and values behind their family’s traditions.
